While every holiday is different and requires a different packing list, there are a few time-tested items that should make the cut every time you travel, regardless of your destination, the climate or the type of holiday you're going on. These are our top 10 travel essentials we recommend packing for your next holiday.
1. A Daypack
A small, squashable daypack that can easily fit in your luggage will be invaluable on any holiday. You can use it for all of your day trip essentials - water bottles, camera, devices, guidebooks and folding umbrella - rather than carting around a huge bag all day long. Plus, if you go a little overboard in your shopping, you can use it as a spillover bag on the way home.
2. Travel Toiletries
After endless hours of travel, a few toiletry items can help you feel slightly human again once you reach your destination, so we reckon a small tube of toothpaste and your toothbrush, some deodorant, wet wipes, hand sanitiser and moisturiser (in small hand luggage size to meet airport liquid requirements, of course) should always be included in your packing list.
A sarong can be a traveller's best friend as it can be used in so many ways - as nightwear, as a makeshift towel at the beach, as coverup for temple visits or even to wrap around a jumper to make a pillow.
4. A Good Hat
A crushable, wide-brimmed hat is a good addition to any holiday, and is even better if it is waterproof. You'll want something that is suitable for all conditions - wind, rain or sun - and won't get ruined in your luggage when you pack quickly.
5. Quality Earplugs
If you're a light sleeper, these are especially important. You can use them to block out plane noise, or the snores of your travel partner. Either way, you'll be better rested for your holiday.
6. Swiss Army Knife
This pocket-sized toolkit can come in handy in so many ways - just don't forget it in your hand luggage! Need to open a bottle of wine? No problem - you have your Swiss Army Knife. Need a can opened so you can make dinner? Swiss Army Knife to the rescue. The uses are endless!
7. Universal Adapter
A three-pin Aussie to international adapter is vital, and will be even more handy if it has a USB port too. And if you have multiple electronic devices and have the space in your luggage, pack a powerboard, because then you only need one adapter.
8. Zip Lock Bags
These could be handy in so many ways - from separating your wet clothes from your dry, dirty from your clean, storing potentially leaky items, carrying those essential travel toiletries, or keeping your passport and phone dry.
You never know when a good tube of superglue might come in handy - maybe your shoe breaks, or you need to mend your suitcase on the go.
This is more life essential than travel essential, but if you require any medications, please don't forget to pack them as well as your prescpription for them. Some places may want to see your prescription to prove the medication is yours, or you may need to order more while you're travelling and this will help international doctors find you the same - or similar - medication.
