Meet the world's most environmentally friendly cruise ship
Talking sustainability
When talking sustainability, cruise ships are not normally included in the conversation of controlling carbon emissions, water treatment, recycling, waste and sewage control, but Hurtigruten’s newest additional, the MS Roald Amundsen has changed all that!
Norwegian cruise operator, Hurtigruten, last year launched the world’s first hybrid electric-powered expedition ship, the MS Roald Amundsen, a 530 passenger vessel, named after the Norwegian explorer who was the first explorer to cross Antarctica and reach the South Pole and also to navigate the Northwest Passage by boat. How is that for credentials?

Hybrid Electric Power
The MS Roald Amundsen is the first hybrid operating system that uses large battery banks to supplement main engine power, which run on low sulfur marine gas oil. This reduces fuel usage and lowers CO2 carbon emissions by 20 percent through storing excess energy in the batteries and then drawing from them when the ship needs extra energy.
State of the Art Science Centre
Onboard features state of the art technology with the Science Centre offering high-tech science equipment such as underwater drones, touch screen technology and gadgets galore – a great way for the ships expedition team members to engage with guests through what Hurtigruten call “citizen learning”. This ship has been specifically designed for polar voyages, with the hybrid technology providing guests with an almost silent propulsion through some of the world’s most jaw-dropping landscapes and closer marine wildlife encounters.
Luxury Guest Experience
From a cruise experience viewpoint, elegant features such as the infinity pool, private hot tubs and the largest LED screen at sea provide an unbeatable luxury polar experience.
Sustainability Goals and Future Ships
In addition to developing world-first hybrid ship technology, Hurtigruten’s sustainability approach also includes a ban on single-use plastics and the aim of being totally emission-free within 20 years. It certainly creates the perfect expedition ship as it sails into the fragile waters of Antarctica, Alaska, Norway and Greenland. The Roald Amundsen is the first of three hybrid powered ships. The MS Fridtjof Nansen will debut in 2020 and an as yet unnamed ship will be delivered after this. The next generation of hybrid ships will run from this battery power, as well as liquefied natural gas and biogas made from organic waste, such as dead sea life.
