Kangaroo Island - Australia's Nature's Playground
When lightning struck the Flinders Chase national park struck in 2020, the largest fires in the South Australian island’s history were sparked. Almost 50% of the 440,500-hectare area was reduced to sandy hills and blackened branches. But 2021 is bringing renewal to Kangaroo Island, revealing one of Australia’s best bucket list getaways, and bringing hope to local tourism operators and the 4,500 community who live there.
The abundant wildlife is returning after a 40% survival rate (the expected was 12%) to the region, with glossy black cockatoo fledglings being spotted after cockatoo “apartments” were built to replace tree hollows that could take over 100 years to regrow. Tunnels have been built for the remaining 300-500 threatened nocturnal dunnarts that call the island home, and kangaroos and koalas are again listening to the thriving birdsong that fills the air.
